Caribbean Fun Day

    Monday 1st May: Caribbean Fun Day at the Derek Walcott Square in Castries, from 11am-6pm. Organised by the Salvation Army, with cultural presentations from Guyana, St. Kitts and Nevis, Grenada, Jamaica, Trinidad and St. Lucia. Under the patronage of Justice Suzie d'Auvergne.

St. Lucia in Concert - Weekly Folk Party

    Every Thursday evening at 7:00 pm: 'St. Lucia in Concert - A Folk Party', organised by the Folk Research Centre at Indies Nightclub. An avenue for entertainment and education for locals and visitors. Includes dinner and performances. Tickets available from Folk Research Centre, tel. 453-1477.

2000 Canadian Fine Food Show

    April 30 - 2nd May: 2000 Canadian Fine Food Show, Ontario, Canada. This year special attention for Ethnic Foods. Canada's national show for speciality retail and food service trade. Attracts 2600 buyers from across Canada and the USA. The Ministry invites manufacturers to participate. Contact Ms. Frederick at tel. 452-1706 or 468-4211, before 24th March.

Free Spanish classes

    Tuesday 2nd May: commencement of Free Spanish classes at Venezuelan Institute for Culture and Co-operation, Gardina Avenue, Sans Soucis. Classes for Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Conversation levels, twice a week from Monday to Thursday. Registration for persons who are already students: Monday 17th to Thursday 20th May. Registration for new students: Tuesday 25th - Friday 28th May. Please register between 1:00 pm and 7:30 pm.

Science Fair for students

    Wednesday 3rd - Friday 5th May: National Mathematics, Science and Technology Fair at Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School. Organised by Ministry of Education under the theme 'Mathematics, Science and Technology: Crossing the Frontier into the New Millennium'. Participants from primary and secondary schools and SALCC. Open to the public on 4th and 5th May, from 10am till 4 pm.

SLHTA's quarterly meeting

    5th May, Royal St. Lucian Hotel: quarterly general meeting of the St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA). Starts at 9am.

Preliminaries to Miss Commonwealth Caribbean

    Friday 5th May, National Cultural Centre: preliminary show to select St. Lucian candidate for Miss Commonwealth Caribbean Pageant. With eight participants. Finale of Miss Commonwealth Caribbean Pageant, involving candidates representing all seventeen countries, to be held in St. Lucia on 25th August.

    Saturday 6th May: LUCELEC Annual General Meeting at NIS Building, 5th floor, Waterfront, Castries, from 10am.

Teachers' Credit Co-op Society

    Sunday 7th May: annual general meeting of St. Lucia Teachers' Credit Co-operative Society Ltd. Starts at 10am, at the Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School.

Celebrity Charity Event

    10th May, Hyatt Regency Hotel: St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association's second annual celebrity charity event - part of the Jazz Festival programme. Main attraction Miss Universe 1998, Wendy Fitzwilliams. Entertainment by Richard Bona, Third Eye, Allegro Pan Groove, Ener G, Jamonix Steel Orchestra and Les Enfants Dance Company. Tickets available at the Jazz Shop at Pointe Seraphine. All benefits for the St. Lucia Save the Children Fund.

Chef Harry's birthday

    Wednesday 10th May: Special Mass in observance of Chef Harry's 64th birthday at the Marchand Church, from 6 pm. Organised by Marchand Mothers Group.

Year 2000 Essay Competition

    Year 2000 essay competition for students aged 15-18. Organised by Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. $15,000 in prizes for schools and individual participants. Topic: "Even as they seek enforcement of the WTO ruling which could adversely affect the region's banana industry, the US is actively courting our assistance in their fight against drug trafficking and money laundering. What do you think our position should be?" Deadline for submission: 12th May, 2000.

Calypso season 2000

    Friday 19th May: opening Calypso season 2000. With five competing Calypso tents. Soca Monarch Finals to be held on Friday 7th July at the Marchand Grounds.

International Dance Day

    Saturday 20th May: International Dance Day celebration with the performance of five original pieces by The Dance Theatre Company - a new group consisting of ten dancers drawn from various dance groups across St. Lucia. Venue: Castries Comprehensive School Auditorium, start at 7:30 pm.

French Creole trans-island link-up

    21-23rd May: simultaneous trans-island video/audio link-up between St. Lucia, Martinique and Dominica: 'Duty of Remembrance/Trans-Islands'. Eighteen hours of advanced video conferencing, regional TV, radio and internet link-up.

Marriage Enrichment Seminar

    Until - 25th May, every Monday and Thursday for six weeks: Marriage Enrichment Seminar, for couples who have been married five years or less and who wish to improve their marriage relationship. Sponsored by the Family Life Ministries Department of St. Lucia Mission of 7th Day Adventists. Venue: Maranatha Seventh-Day Adventist Church, corner of Lanse Road and Vide Bouteille Road.

Caribbean Studies conference

    Monday 29th May - Friday 3rd June: 25th annual conference of Caribbean Studies Association. Venue: Hyatt Regency Hotel. Brings together some 500 scholars on topics pertaining to the Caribbean and its people. Theme this year: 'The Caribbean on the move: confidently into the 21st century'. Local organising committee: John Robert Lee and Matthew Roberts.

Fashion Awareness Week

    27th May - 2nd June: Fashion Awareness Week. With exhibitions and fashion shows to promote the local fashion industry. Gospelypso Festival

    8th July, Castries Comprehensive School Auditorium: Gospelypso Festival. Preliminaries of the Gospel Calypso contest start after 15th May. Live CD will be produced of night of the finals.

Carifesta II: Caribbean Festival of Arts 2000

    17th-26th August: Caribbean Festival of Arts, Carifesta. In St. Kitts and Nevis. For information, call 453-2338.
