 St. Lucia - USA Family Day Festival

    Sunday 5th September: 7th Annual Caribbean American Family Day Festival, to be held on Webster Avenue between Gun Hill Road and East 233rd Street. This festival - the brain child of St. Lucian Marlon Gill - is said to attract the largest Caribbean/American audience in NY State, at some 25,000 plus. Second only to Brooklyn's Annual West Indian Parade on eastern Parkway, which is usually the day after the Family Day Festival.

    Expected to appear: the Mighty Sparrow, Mikey 'Mack Daddy' Jarret, Ambelique, the A-Team Band, Exposer, Tricky, Ras Iley, Lady Guymine, Krosfyah, Invader, Rich-E-Rich, Jaunty, Gospel Vibrators, Caribbean Eagles Steel Orchestra, Breakaway Brass and King Obstinate. Other activities include mini-carnival, ethnic food, clothing and antiques market, awards ceremony for outstanding community members and dance renditions.

Youth Summer Football Programme

    The whole month of August: youth summer football programme for 9-15 year-olds. Castries: 9-14 Aug. (register at Central Library); Dennery: 16-21 (Dennery library); Vieux Fort: 23-28 (Vieux Fort library); Soufriere: 30 Aug - 3rd September (Soufriere library). All sessions from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. at Mindoo Philip Park or the local playing field


Junior International Tennis Tournament

    August 9th - 14th:  Coca Cola Junior International Tennis Tournament, at the St. Lucia Racquet Club. Opening ceremonies from 5 pm. About 125 players from all over the world are expected this year. Last year, St. Lucian Yves Sinson won singles title in age 16 category.  Sinson and Sirsean Arlain are St. Lucia's favourites this year.


Gros Islet Day Street Fair

    Weekend of July 30 - August 2: Gros Islet Day Street Fair, 'Towards a shared sense of Community'. Activities are: road race, domino competition, J'ouvert, musical entertainment for the traditional street fair, barbecue sauce competition, football and netball events and a treat for 100 underprivileged children.

 
Benefits to gain from St. Lucia Promotion in USA

    The St. Lucia Tourist Board has embarked on its Island Adventure Promotion in the US market. Those purchasing the Island Adventure Package from their travel agent in the US receive benefits such as a free night on a stay of four nights or longer, discounts from certain stores and restaurant, free adventure tours, and gift vouchers. The promotion runs until November 30. Last year, the promotion resulted in a 15 percent increase in visitor arrivals during the summer months.


Folk Reserch Centre workshops for children

    July 26-August 7, Christine Samuel's Dance Centre, Chisel St., Castries: workshop 'Rhythms and movements' organised by the FRC for children aged 6 to 12. August 7: public performance. July 26-August 7, Folk Research Centre, Mt. Pleasant, Castries: theatre workshop for teenagers. Organisers: FRC, with Fish Alphonse, Louis Mc.Williams (of the Festival Centre of the Creative Arts of Trinidad) and Adrian Augier.

    October 2, Creole Heritage Month: public performance of the FRC teens theatre production.

Ting Walkathon

    Monday August 2, 7 a.m., walk from Vigie Field to Pigeon Point Landmark for individuals, teams, clubs, companies, schools and the disabled. Proceeds to benefit the National Council for the Disabled. Medals awarded to first three places in individual categories. Gift certificates for oldest and youngest participant. Win trips to Trinidad and Barbados.
    After the walk, at Pigeon Point Landmark: Power Brew Disco, 3 on 3 Ting basketball competition, Calypsonians in concert, with 1999 Calypso King and Les Enfants Dance Company.

Miss Caribbean Island Queen

    September, Castries: Miss Caribbean Island Queen show. Contestants from St. Lucia, Barbados, Trinidad, St. Maarten, Grenada and Tobago. St. Lucia is represented by Avrile Gilbert, Island Teen '95 and Island Queen '98.
