Young people and the cooperative movement

    Monday 21st and 28th August: youth caucus to introduce young people to the concept of cooperatives as an alternative form of business. Organised by the ministry of Community Development and Local Cooperatives, and the ministry of Youth and Sports. On the 21st at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College extension in Vieux Fort, and on the 28th at the NIS conference centre in Castries. Both meetings start at 10:00 am.

Seafood Fridays

    Every Friday: Seafood Friday in Anse la Raye. Enjoy seafood dishes and live entertainment on the waterside in the quaint westcoast fishing village of Anse la Raye.

Basketball summer school

    Until 26th August: Mr. Magic Basketball School summer camp. Venue: Sir Ira Simmons Secondary School. For boys and girls from 5-15 years. Basic ball skills and lectures on sports injuries. For more info, call Morgan George: 452-2933 or 452-5605.

Rural Enterprise Project Awareness Month

    August: St. Lucia Rural Enterprise Project (SLREP) month. With summer camps for school children in the communities of Bouton, Fond St. Jacques, Caferiere, Grace, Ti Rocher, Mon Repos. Also rural animation with Tanbou Mele, community events in Riviere Doree, an open day in Delcer/La pointe on Sunday 27th August and a Walaba cricket match involving women from the communities.

Grande Riviere Junior Club

    Until 25th August: Grande Riviere Junior Club Summer 2000 programme. Held at the Vide Bouteille Secondary School, from 9am to 2:30 pm, for ages 2-16.
    Kindergarden: learning with video aids; Summer School: Reading, writing, maths etc.; Computer programme: internet and email. Also: Arts & Crafts, singing, drama, educational tours. Fees cover snacks and transportation. For more info, call: 450-3547 or 452-6601.

Carifesta II: Caribbean Festival of Arts 2000

    17th-26th August: Caribbean Festival of Arts, Carifesta. In St. Kitts and Nevis. For information, call 453-2338.

Commonwealth Awareness Week

    Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th August: Commonwealth Awareness showcase, Castries City Hall. Also Wednesday: fashion parade at the Derek Walcott Square, lunchtime. Meet the contestants for the Miss Commonwealth Pageant, which takes place on Friday 25th August. Finally, on the weekend: Commonwealth Walk, from Castries City to Piegon Island.

International Woodworking Fair

St. Lucia Expo 2000 Trade Show

    25th-27th August: St. Lucia Expo 2000 Trade Show. Venues: Sir Ira Simmons and Castries Comprehensive Secondary Schools. To stimulate consumers to Buy Local. For more info, call the ministry of Commerce (452-1706) or the Chamber of Commerce (468-4211).

National Youth Council AGM

    26th August: Annual general meeting of the National Youth Council in Desruisseaux (postponed from earlier date 12th August).

Reggae at Marchand Grounds

    Saturday 26th August: Major Reggae concert at the Marchand Groups, organised by the Funatix Carnival band, in conjunction with Tower Promotions of Trinidad. Featuring the 'Morgan Family': Morgan Heritage, LMS and Denroy Morgan.

UK Immigration Officer visits

    29th-31st August: Immigration/visa officer visits St. Lucia. St. Lucian passport holders wishing to travel to the United Kingdom for settlement, employment (incl. entertainers), study, medical reasons or for more than six months should make an appointment. For questions, call the High Commissioner, 452-2484 or visit the British High Commission, 2nd Floor, NIS Building, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday to Thursday and 8:00 am to 1:00 pm on Fridays.

HIV/AIDS conference

    11-12th September: International HIV/AIDS conference, Sherbourne Conference Centre, Barbados. Bringing together some 180 people, including regional heads of government.

SLHTA pageant

    Friday 29th September: St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association Pageant.

Annual Gift and Craft Show

    5th-8th October: 7th Annual Caribbean Gift and Craft Show. Venue: Sherbourne Conference Centre, Barbados, organized by the Caribbean Export Development Agency. Bringing together some 150 exhibitors from 20 Caribbean countries and over 200 buyers from North America, Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean.

UWP Annual Convention and preceding meetings

    15th October: 31st annual convention of the United Workers Party, hosted by the constituency of Vieux Fort South. Preceding the annual convention are the following meetings:
    Sunday 20th August: Northern Zonal Conference, hosted by West Babonneau, venue: Castries Comprehensive Secondary School.
    Sunday 27th August: Southern Zonal Conference, Choiseul.
    Sunday 3rd September: Delegates Conference, La Ressource, Dennery.

Science of Steelpan Conference

    16th-18th October: First International Conference on the Science and Technology of the Steelpan. To be held at Crowne Plaza in Trinidad & Tobago. Organised by the University of the West Indies. Dominica World Creole Music Festival

    27th-29th October: Dominica World Creole Music Festival. With creole food, fashion and of course music in the genres of Soukous, Salsa, Zouk, Zydeco, Cadence, Compa, Quadrille and even some Reggae. In St. Lucia, tickets ($50 p/night or $125 for the entire three-day event) are available at Carib Travel, EC Express and Air Jamaica.
