 St. Lucia - USA Family Day Festival

    Sunday 5th September: 7th Annual Caribbean American Family Day Festival, to be held on Webster Avenue between Gun Hill Road and East 233rd Street. This festival - the brain child of St. Lucian Marlon Gill - is said to attract the largest Caribbean/American audience in NY State, at some 25,000 plus. Second only to Brooklyn's Annual West Indian Parade on eastern Parkway, which is usually the day after the Family Day Festival.

    Expected to appear: the Mighty Sparrow, Mikey 'Mack Daddy' Jarret, Ambelique, the A-Team Band, Exposer, Tricky, Ras Iley, Lady Guymine, Krosfyah, Invader, Rich-E-Rich, Jaunty, Gospel Vibrators, Caribbean Eagles Steel Orchestra, Breakaway Brass and King Obstinate. Other activities include mini-carnival, ethnic food, clothing and antiques market, awards ceremony for outstanding community members and dance renditions.

World Creole Music Festival in Dominica

    Friday October 29th - Sunday 31st, Roseau, Dominica: third annual Dominica World Creole Festival. With appearances by Boukman Eksperyans, Ruff and Ready, First Serenade, Nasio Fontane, De De Saint Prix (Martinique), Swinging Stars (Dominica), Malavoi (Martinique), Ophelia, Shah Shah (Haiti), Diblo Dibla et Matchatcha (Zaire), Grammacks, Mifle (Guadeloupe), WCK, Exile One, Tabou Combo, Zouk All Stars and Reasons Orchestra (St. Lucia).

All Breed Dog show

    Sunday August 29, 3 pm - 6 pm, Vigie Multi Purpose Complex. Third Annual All Breed Dog Show. With competitions in adult and puppy categories for all breeds of dogs, overall best dog of the show, Erma Compton Trophy winner, obedience handling and 'best dressed' dog. Also scheduled to perform: attack trained dogs and drug dogs of the canine section of the police force. For the first time, judging will take place by an internationally certified judge. UNESCO lecture on abolition

    August 23rd, 7.30 p.m., New NIS Building: UNESCO lecture by Gregor Williams: "St. Lucia and Liberty: The Route to Independence".

Miss SLHTA contest

    August 27th, 8 pm, Cultural Centre: Miss St. Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association contest. Tickets available at all leading hotels.

La Rose grand seance

    August 28th, City Hall: grand seance organised by Grand Riviere La Rose group.
    August 30th: La Rose flower festival.

Bureau of Standards seminar

    August 24th: first of series of seminars by Bureau of Standards. Part of public awareness campaign. This first seminar is on 'The importance of building material standards in the construction  industry'. For info, call 453-0049.

Creative Treasures '99

    August 27-29th, NDC's Factory Shell, Union: Creative Treasures '99. Expo of local products, organised by Chamber of Commerce. Businesses interested in participating, contact 452-3165 or 453-1540.

Regional Lions meet

    August 25-29th: regional meeting of Lions Club with participants from the wider Caribbean. Under the presidency of St. Lucian Eldridge Stephens, current district governor. Includes workshops on youth outreach and mentorship, cancer awareness, club officers and leadership development.

Furniture Showcase '99 rescheduled

    Rescheduled: Furniture Showcase 99, at NDC factory shell, Union Industrial Estate. New date: September 8-12. Five days of  locally made furniture exhibition and demonstrations. Organised under auspices of ministry of Commerce.

M&C Fine Arts Awards

    Until September 30th: deadline for submissions of  literary work for M&C Fine Arts Award, and for performing artists' resumes of work done during the year.
    October 30th: Opening of M&C Fine Arts Awards Annual Exhibition at Castries City Hall.

Smooth Summer Concert, Trinidad

    August 28th, Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad. Smooth Summer Concert: biggest Caribbean concert ever at the oval. With Lauryn Hill, Sizzla and Morgan Heritage.

Calypso King of Kings

    August 30: Calypso King of Kings competition, second round. To be held in Trinidad. St. Lucian entrant is Jason Joseph, better known as reigning Calypso king 'Bachelor'.

Remembrance of Slave Trade

    August 23: International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. Commemoration activities in various schools with support from National Commission for UNESCO.

Youth Summer Football Programme

    The whole month of August: youth summer football programme for 9-15 year-olds. Castries: 9-14 Aug. (register at Central Library); Dennery: 16-21 (Dennery library); Vieux Fort: 23-28 (Vieux Fort library); Soufriere: 30 Aug - 3rd September (Soufriere library). All sessions from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. at Mindoo Philip Park or the local playing field

Benefits to gain from St. Lucia Promotion in USA

    The St. Lucia Tourist Board has embarked on its Island Adventure Promotion in the US market. Those purchasing the Island Adventure Package from their travel agent in the US receive benefits such as a free night on a stay of four nights or longer, discounts from certain stores and restaurant, free adventure tours, and gift vouchers. The promotion runs until November 30. Last year, the promotion resulted in a 15 percent increase in visitor arrivals during the summer months.

    September, Castries: Miss Caribbean Island Queen show. Contestants from St. Lucia, Barbados, Trinidad, St. Maarten, Grenada and Tobago. St. Lucia is represented by Avrile Gilbert, Island Teen '95 and Island Queen '98.
