Fashion Photo Shoot

    Until 22nd January: American super-model Tyra Banks visits St. Lucia for major fashion shoot by Essence Magazine's June and July issues. Local models may present portfolios to St. Lucia Tourist Board at Pointe Seraphine until 11th January.

    19th January 2000: Chamber of Commerce conference and workshop on 'Lowering the cost of capital through development of a capital market'.


Nobel Laureates Week

    Saturday 22nd January: M&C Fine Arts Awards Committee Presentation. 7:30 pm, National Cultural Centre. 'Pinnacles of Pride'.
    Sunday 23rd: A Day with Derek Walcott at Pigeon Island National Landmark. To celebrate his 70th birthday. From 10:00 am, with music and poetry. 
    Monday 24th: Celebrating the Laureates. 7:00 pm, Derek Walcott Square. Tributes, addresses,  music and entertainment.
    Tuesday 25th: Opening of Lewis/Walcott exhibition. 10:00 am, Castries City Hall. Secondary Schools' tributes, National Cultural Centre, 2:00 pm. Evening of Poetry and Music: 7:00 pm, Central Library Castries.
    Wednesday 26th: Derek Walcott evening: 8:00 pm, NCC. Guest speaker, Lorna Goodison, Jamaican poet, dramatic presentation produced by Dr. Michael Gilkes. Presentations by Derek and Roderick Walcott.
    Thursday 27th: Panel discussion South. 5:00 pm, Bellevue School, Vieux Fort. 'Coping with cultural and economic globalization'. Lessons from St. Lucia's Laureates, followed by social event.
    Friday 28th: Wreath laying ceremony. 10:00 am, Sir Arthur Lewis' tomb, The Morne. Sir Arthur Lewis Memorial Lecture: 7:00 pm, SALCC Library. Guest speaker Dr. Henri Bazin.
    8th-12th February: Walcott/Lewis exhibition in Soufriere.
    15th-19th February: Walcott/Lewis exhibition in Vieux Fort.


Jamaica Jazz Festival

    20th-23rd January 2000: Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival, at James Bond Beach in Oracabessa, and Jamaica Grande Hotel at Ocho Rios. Featuring Gladys Knight, Mary J. Blige, Kool & The Gang, Kenny G and Al Jarreau.

    Wednesday 9th February: benefit piano recital by Vladimir Ashkenazy. With music by Schumann, Rachmaninov and Rave. Organised by the School of Music.

CTO Fundraiser Ball in Miami

    Saturday 19th February, 2000: Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) Fundraiser Ball. Bringing together South Florida Caribbean community, CTO Allied Members, government officials, chapter members and friends at the Hyatt Hotel in downtown Miami. Featuring music from the Caribbean, delicious cuisine and a raffle/silent auction with a variety of items including Caribbean hotel stays and airfare, jewelry and Caribbean artwork.


Construction Trade Fair in Havana

Year 2000 Essay Competition

    Year 2000 essay competition for students aged 15-18. Organised by Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. $15,000 in prizes for schools and individual participants. Topic: "Even as they seek enforcement of the WTO ruling which could adversely affect the region's banana industry, the US is actively courting our assistance in their fight against drug trafficking and money laundering. What do you think our position should be?" Deadline for submission: 12th May, 2000.


Carifesta II: Caribbean Festival of Arts 2000

    Carifesta II, the seventh Caribbean Festival of Arts, in August 2000 will be held in St. Kitts & Nevis. All countries "washed by the Caribbean Sea" are invited to participate. Sponsored by UNESCO.
