Offshore Oil Rigs:

Following email notification from one of our users, St. Lucia Online carried out further investigations into the company offering job positions on Offshore Oil Rigs. The following extract copied verbatim from a newsgroup listing best summarises the concerns being expressed about this company (Please note that these job advertisements are also being carried in our local newspapers ):

" PHONY "LIBERIAN" COMPANY ALSO ACTIVE IN SURINAME
Caledonian Offshore Limited, a company that has also advertised in DWT for applicants in the oil sector, tuns out to be a phony company. The company claims that it has jobs available in the offshore sector, and pays between US$ 310 and US$ 430 a day. Applicants were referred to an address in Canada. Some Surinamese have applied, but others have doubts, as US$ 87 must be paid to obtain further information. After they apply, applicants receive a brochure with more information about the company, and this is apparently intended to lure them further. If the information provided is to be believed, Caledonian is a company with much potential, investing in oil fields in the Middle East, the Gulf of Mexico, Venezuela, the North Sea, Kazakstan, South-east Asia and West Africa. Once the 'potential employee' is hooked by the company's grand future plans and is told about offshore work, the trap is sprung. If the applicant is still interested in the job, he must fill in a form and return it with US$ 87. Meanwhile, it turns out that Caledonian is active not only in Suriname, but in other countries as well. In the Netherlands, it turns out to be a 'mailbox company' operating out of Montfoort. After a two-week investigation, the Dutch Economic Controls Department (ECD) concluded that Caledonian offers non-existing jobs. The ECD started its investigations after it had received complaints from Malaysia, Egypt, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia. The ECD found out that Caledonian is running such advertisements in different countries. Meanwhile, the real headquarters of this phony company have been revealed. In the Netherlands, it has turned out that mail sent to the mailbox in Montfoort is sent on to Panama and Canada. However, Canadian authorities say that Caledonian Offshore Ltd. is not registered in Canada, and that the company's address there is only for correspondence. The Canadians suspect that Caledonian is registered in Panama. However, Caledonian claims in its own brochures that it operates under Liberian law. Yet it gives no address in that country. "
