St Lucia popular with last-minute holidaymakers
With holidaymakers increasingly making last-minute decisions to travel, the immediate future of St Lucia's tourism industry remains even more unclear than usual - but for the time being, arrivals and bookings are definitely up. This is reported by both minister for Tourism Philip Pierre and president of the St Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association, Berthia Parle. Following a mediocre season last year and the plunge in business following the attack on the World Trade Centre on September 11th, hoteliers, restaurateurs and others are finally breathing a little more easily again, with some hotels registering occupancy rates of 60 to 90 percent. The attraction of St Lucia lies partially in the fact that various airlines and hotels are offering special packages - although, as Ms Parle explains, competition for the tourist dollar is fierce worldwide at the moment. Parle is quoted in The Star as saying: "We have to recognise that persons who come to the Caribbean really want to come here. And we have to ensure that when they come they are really treated with the best service, because if they are then they will remain loyal."
