What's the catch?

We feel that by understanding the background to this service you will better appreciate its capabilities and limitations. The important thing for most of us is that it works, is reliable enough for general use and ... is free. Of course, as with all services provided by St. Lucia Online, there is no catch.

Background information

The underlying service was started in 1993 as an experiment to combine email and fax technologies. Messages travel most of the way by Internet (free), with only the final "local hop" from computer to fax machine being done by a special computer called a local fax server. This local fax server covers a specific area or region and is provided on a voluntary basis by community spirited individuals and organisations. The number of volunteers has grown significantly over the years and there is now wide international coverage. We recommend checking the coverage areas before attempting to send a fax. With this in mind we feel sure that you will appreciate the following:

We cannot guarantee the quality of service

Coverage of certain areas/countries may change from time to time

There may be occasional delays in the delivery of faxes

The service should not be abused e.g by sending bulk faxes, junk-mail etc.

There is currently no free service for incoming faxes to St. Lucia

What about privacy?

There are rules which ensure that the contents of faxes are secure and will not be monitored by the operators of local fax servers. However we recommend user discretion.
